Grapes
Premium Varietals
Amador County has long been known for its distinctive Zinfandel grapes.
Growers have discovered that other grape varietals produce award
winning wines.
The French word ”terroir” describes a particular combination of the
soil and climate that gives the grapes (therefore the wine)
its flavor. The rocky soil and warm temperatures have made Amador
County one of the ideal locations for Rhone varietals. The best of
the Amador County Viogniers compete with the much sought after French
Condrieus from the northern Rhone valley. Recently vintners have
produced many wonderful Rousannes and Marsannes from Amador vineyards.
For a real treat try wines made from our Mourvedre grapes or the
Spanish grape Tempranillo. Since most of the early settlers were
of Italian descent it is only natural that many of the Italian varietals
are strongly represented. Barbera grapes produce a red wine with
significant structure can be that enjoyed immediately. Growers and
vintners specializing in the elusive Sangiovese grape experimented
with different clones until they found the right combination for
the area. Try one! The five portuguese grapes that make up blends
to produce a true port style wine do well in this climate and these
ports are among the most sought after in our tasting rooms. The following
